File the FAFSA

Developed by the U.S. Department of Education, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is one of the key components to college affordability. This application determines eligibility for federal grants, loans and work-study programs.

Federal Student Aid IDs (FSA ID)

New students and FAFSA contributors — commonly a student’s parent(s), stepparent(s), or spouse — will need Federal Student Aid IDs (FSA ID) to complete the FAFSA. Each contributor is issued an FSA ID by creating an account on Keep a record of each of these FSA IDs for updating your FAFSA every year. Your FSA ID lets users sign the FAFSA, track your application, fix mistakes, and sign for loans. If you or your contributors have already completed a FAFSA in the past you/they will already have an FSA ID.

Complete and Submit the FAFSA

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after the application becomes available and strive to meet the campus target date for submission. It’s good to note that the majority of federal funding for school, including Pell, doesn’t hinge on our campus target date. There are, however, a small number of aid programs that are distributed on a first-come first-served basis. For this reason, we suggest you submit your FAFSA as soon as you can for the best chances at all possible avenues to aid. Once your form is processed, you will receive a confirmation email from FAFSA so you can review the results and make any necessary changes.

SUNY Oswego’s Federal School Code is 002848.

Review Your FAFSA Submission

Your FAFSA Submission Summary provides an overview of the data you submitted on your FAFSA and shows your Student Aid Index (SAI), a number used to determine your eligibility for need-based aid.  If you have provided an email address on your FAFSA, you will receive an email notification once your FAFSA form has been fully processed, and your FAFSA information has been sent to the schools listed on your form. If information is deemed incorrect or absent, see How to Review and Correct Your FAFSA Form to make adjustments. If your current financial situation was not accurately reflected on the FAFSA, adjustments can be made in some cases. Contact the Office of Financial Aid to consider a Professional Judgement request.
