Federal student aid rules and FAFSA processes are changing for the 2026-27 academic year. SUNY Oswego is monitoring federal and state guidance and will update this page as more information becomes available.
This page is intended to help students and families understand what is changing, what may still be unclear, and what steps they can take now.

What students and families should know
The 2026-27 financial aid year may include changes to the FAFSA process, federal student loan eligibility, and borrowing limits for some students and families.
Some changes may affect:
- Undergraduate students and families using federal loans
- Parents who borrow through the Federal Parent PLUS Loan program
- Graduate students who use federal loans to help pay for their degree
- Students enrolled less than full time
- Students beginning a new program or changing programs
SUNY Oswego will continue to review federal and state guidance and update this page as more information becomes available. Students and families should not assume that prior-year borrowing rules, loan options or aid processes will remain the same for 2026-27.
What you should do now
Students and families are encouraged to:
- Complete the FAFSA as soon as it becomes available.
- Monitor your SUNY Oswego email and financial aid portal for updates.
- Review your prior federal loan borrowing at StudentAid.gov
- Contact the SUNY Oswego Financial Aid Office before making borrowing or enrollment decisions based on federal loan availability.
Ask questions early, especially if you rely on Parent PLUS, Graduate PLUS or other federal loans to help cover educational costs.
