Composting

at SUNY Oswego

Composting is integral to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. SUNY Oswego is focused on keeping all types of food waste generated by our retail and residential dining facilities out of landfills. This includes the pre-consumer waste generated during food preparation and post-consumer waste generated by customers after dining. All food waste is diverted to Bristol Hill Composting Facility to be turned into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

This page describes SUNY Oswego's process and commitment to ensuring food waste is properly handled and composted.

Composting in Dining Halls:

Pre-consumer waste:

In food preparation areas, staff collect scraps, trimmings, and other compostable materials throughout the day. That waste is dehydrated then sent to Bristol Hill for further processing.

Post-Consumer Waste:

After a customer has finished dining, any compostable waste such as the items listed below are collected in the compostables bin, mixed with the pre-consumer waste, dehydrated, and sent to Bristol Hill.
