Waste Initiatives

At the Office of Sustainability, there are many programs designed to help achieve our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. These initiatives aim to address all aspects of waste at SUNY Oswego.

Listed below, and on the pages nested to the right, are the waste based initiatives The Office of Sustainability organizes.

Shining Waters

Shining Waters is a weekly program, which focuses on removing litter from campus. The program is popular among Sports teams and Greek Life providing students with community service opportunities. We remove approximately 200 lbs of litter per semester from our campus community.

To join in and learn more find a Shining Waters event on the events calendar.

Oz Compost

Surplus food from residential and retail dining facilities is sustainably managed via two mechanisms: donation and compost. Food that is deemed safe for donation is shared with on- and off- campus food pantries, and through additional programming efforts. Annually, the campus typically donates approximately 7,500 pounds of food. Food items that are not fit for donation are sent to the Bristol Hill Composting Facility to be turned into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. This composting effort diverts approximately 100,000 lbs of organic waste from landfills and incinerators every year.

Oz Thrift

OzThrift is an end-of-semester student donation collection. These student donations are collected and sorted from the residence halls. These goods are then made available to the campus community to provide accessible clothing, electronics, and other necessities. Every year, roughly 30,000 pounds of clothing, electronics, and other student donations are diverted from landfills. This semiannual OzThrift sale creates a circular economy of goods at SUNY Oswego.
