The Laker Residential Experience

At Oswego, we believe learning happens everywhere—and your home on campus is one of the most important places it begins.

Learning Where You Live

Getting involved is one of the best ways to make the most of your time living on campus at SUNY Oswego. Whether you’re meeting new people, attending events, or connecting with your residence hall support team, there are countless ways to build community in the residence halls. Students are encouraged to stay connected and see what’s happening by following Residence Life & Housing on our Instagram page for highlights, updates, and upcoming events.

At SUNY Oswego, living on campus is more than just having a place to stay—it’s an opportunity to grow, connect, and thrive. Through our Laker Residential Experience, we intentionally create opportunities for students to learn and develop right where they live.

This approach—called a residential curriculum—means that everything from community events to everyday interactions with our team is designed to support student learning and success. When students feel connected, supported, and engaged outside the classroom, they are more likely to thrive academically and personally.

In our residence halls, students don’t just live together—they build skills, explore their identities, and become active members of a community that supports their goals.

Why a Residential Curriculum Matters

The Laker Residential Experience helps students:

  • Build meaningful connections with peers, staff, and the campus community
  • Develop real-world skills like communication, leadership, and problem-solving
  • Feel a sense of belonging, which is key to success and well-being
  • Navigate challenges with confidence and learn from everyday experiences
  • Grow beyond the classroom through intentional, hands-on learning opportunities

Our residence halls are communities where students live, learn, and grow together—supporting both personal development and academic success.

Our 5 Learning Priorities

The Laker Residential Experience is built on the Division of Student Affairs’ five key learning domains. These priorities guide everything we do in the residence halls:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Students will have opportunities to learn about diverse identities, gain an understanding of others’ perspectives and experiences, understand their privilege within systems of power, identify their biases and the impact of these on others, develop vocabulary and skills to positively engage across differences, learn to advocate for themselves, and to create inclusive and affirming communities.

Well-Being

Students will have opportunities to understand the concepts of well-being while developing skills and strategies that enhance their own physical, behavioral, social, and emotional health. Well-being is the optimal state of living well and thriving. Well-being focuses on the holistic and purposeful growth of the total person and their surrounding community to create lifelong thriving community members.

Self-Efficacy

Students will have opportunities to increase their self-efficacy, the belief that through their own actions they can and will succeed in the pursuit of their goals. With high self-efficacy, students are able to embrace adversity as opportunity, generate innovative solutions to challenges, set meaningful goals, and establish firm belief in their own potential and capacity to achieve their aspirations.

Leadership Development

Students will have opportunities to explore the meaning of leadership as a process for developing individual and organizational capacities to affect impactful change within their communities. Leadership on campus is defined as purposeful, inclusive, ethical, and process-oriented practices.

Community Engagement

Students will have opportunities to explore their own values and how they can contribute to healthy and positive communities by examining the common good vs. individual wants or desires, understanding and adhering to community standards, and developing pride in the community. Students will have opportunities to be engaged as active community members who understand that their actions or inactions have an impact on those around them.

Community Building Activities & Special Events

A key part of the Laker Residential Experience is bringing these learning priorities to life through community building activities and special events in the residence halls.

Throughout the year, students can participate in programs designed to help them connect with others, explore new ideas, and have fun in a supportive environment. These opportunities range from casual, everyday interactions to larger signature events—all intentionally designed to support student learning and development.

Students can:

  • Attend hall programs that help them meet neighbors and build friendships
  • Participate in opportunities that celebrate diverse identities and experiences
  • Join activities focused on wellness, stress management, and self-care
  • Explore leadership opportunities within larger Laker community
  • Engage in campus traditions and special events that create lasting memories

Students are also encouraged to stay connected through social media to keep up with what’s happening in the halls and across campus.

Whether it’s a small gathering on a floor, a collaborative program with campus partners, or a large-scale event, each experience is part of a bigger picture—helping students feel at home while building skills that last far beyond their time at Oswego.

What This Means for Students and Families

For students, the Laker Residential Experience means your residence hall is an extension of your education—a place where you can explore who you are, make connections, and prepare for what comes next.

For families, it means your student is supported by a structured, intentional program focused on their growth, well-being, and success—not just their housing assignment.
