Below is an overview of the leave programs available to benefits-eligible employees. For details on processes and procedures, refer to the Leave of Absence (LOA) Guidelines. To request a leave, complete the Leave Request Form.
Bereavement/Family Sick Leave
There are no separate leave categories for bereavement leave and family sick leave. However, employees may use up to the following number of days of accumulated sick leave credits per year for the death and/or illness of a family member.
- APSU - 15 days
- CSEA - 25 days
- NYSCOBA - 30 days
- Management Confidential - 30 days
- PEF - 25 days
- UUP - 30 days
Blood Donation Leave
Up to four hours per calendar year for all employees.
Cancer Screening Leave
Up to four hours per calendar year for all employees.
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Employees are granted up to 12 work weeks of leave in a 12 month period for certain family and medical reasons. Eligibility starts after 12 months of employment with the NYS and the employee has worked at least 1250 hours in the 12 months immediately preceding the date FMLA leave begins. The employee is required to use all accrued paid leave toward the FMLA entitlement before being authorized leave without pay.
Family members are limited to the employee, spouse, children and the employee’s parents. Please contact the HR Office for the appropriate form.
Jury Duty Leave
The employee is granted paid leave for required jury duty before a court, no accruals need to be charged. Eligibility begins with the first day of employment. The university pays for the employee’s salary while on approved jury duty leave.
Leave Donation
Military Leave
Employees receive full pay for either 22 business days or 30 calendar days, which ever gives the employee a better benefit. Eligibility begins with the first day of employment.

Currently only available for UUP, MC06 and MC13 employees
