Media Production Facilities

SUNY Oswego’s Department of Communication Studies is housed in the newly renovated Hewitt Hall, a state-of-the-art center for media creation, production, and performance. Our facilities include:

  • two professional-grade, multicamera broadcast and streaming television studios

  • a video podcast studio

  • two content creation studios

  • a Foley studio and audio post-production suite

  • a video post-production and editing lab

  • an esports lab

  • a digital news and sports center

  • a virtual and augmented reality studio.

In addition, the department supports media production spaces in the Marano Campus Center, home to the student-run video streaming network WTOP-TV and WNYO-FM, Oswego’s full-time radio and podcast organization. The Oswegonian, SUNY Oswego’s student news organization, also operates from the campus center, producing both print and digital publications.

These facilities support coursework across our degree programs in Broadcast and Digital Media, Journalism, Communication, and Public Relations, providing students with hands-on experience from the moment they arrive on campus. Hewitt Hall brings together classrooms, labs, studios, and collaborative spaces that mirror the professional media and communication environments where our graduates thrive.

Hewitt Hall Broadcast Studio A

Video/Television Production Studio A

This ground-level studio provides a contemporary set for news and sports programming. The colors of the set can be changed with the touch of a button, and it features multiple positions for student producers to place on-air talent, where they can deliver live and pre-produced content. The studio features 4 robotic PTZ cameras, which are controlled from Hewitt Hall's centralized production control on the building's lower level.

Video/Television Production Studio B

This sound stage, on Hewitt Hall's lower level, features a versatile set that could be used for a talk show or transition into a character's living room for a multicamera sitcom. It's all in how the set is dressed for production. This studio also includes a chroma green cyclorama for productions using virtual sets or CGI. The studio has three professional-grade, manually operated Ikagami cameras.

Centralized Production Control Room

Hewitt Hall’s production control room serves as the epicenter of our multicamera productions—whether content is created in our studios or streamed live from campus sports and event venues. Here, students learn to make quick, informed, and creative decisions as directors, technical directors, graphics coordinators, audio operators, producers, and broadcast or streaming engineers, all while working with industry-standard technology.

Foley Studio and Audio Post-Production Suites

The Foley Studio and Audio Post-Production Suites in Hewitt Hall give students the chance to bring stories to life through sound. Whether recording footsteps, recreating ambient environments, or mixing dialogue and music for television and film, students gain hands-on experience with industry tools used by professional sound designers. These spaces teach not just technical skills, but the art of listening, timing, and creative problem solving.

Podcast Studios

The video podcast studio, on Hewitt Hall's first floor, features robotic PTZ cameras and a professional control setup, empowering students to produce dynamic, multi-camera video podcasts that can be prerecorded or live-streamed. On the building's lower level, an audio-only podcast studio offers an immersive space for storytelling through sound, where students refine their producing, editing, and on-air delivery skills for careers in podcasting, radio, and audio production.

Digital News and Sports Center

The Digital News and Sports Center in Hewitt Hall is where stories come to life and deadlines feel real. Modeled after professional broadcast and online newsrooms, the center empowers students to produce breaking news, in-depth features, and live sports coverage for multiple platforms, including websites, social media, television, radio, video streaming, and podcasting. Whether anchoring a segment, producing a live show, editing highlights, or managing digital content, students experience the rush of a professional media operation while building the skills necessary to inform and entertain across media platforms.

Esports Lab

The Esports Lab in Hewitt Hall brings the energy of competitive gaming to campus. Outfitted with cutting-edge gaming PCs and streaming technology, the lab gives students the opportunity to produce live esports broadcasts, hone their shoutcasting and commentary skills, and explore the creative, technical, and business sides of the booming esports industry.

WRVO Public Media: NPR for Central New York

Penfield Hall houses WRVO-FM, SUNY Oswego's award-winning National Public Radio station. WRVO serves a large portion of central and northern New York with news and informational programming. While WRVO is a professionally run media operation, Communication Studies students work at WRVO through internships, by volunteering or in paid positions.
