Fraternity and Sorority Life Handbook 2025-2026

Within the Fraternity and Sorority Life Handbook you will find essential information on policies and procedures, benefits available to chapters, standards of excellence and ensuring chapters aligns with university values and expectations. Our goal is to help you and your organization grow, connect and thrive.

Standards of Excellence
At SUNY Oswego, the Fraternity and Sorority Life community is rooted in the mission to cultivate an inclusive environment where students grow, connect, and thrive through leadership, service, and scholarship. Our Standards of Excellence (SOE) framework reflects this mission through four core pillars that guide chapter success and accountability.

We have set our standards using the four pillars outlined below. Each chapter is expected to submit a comprehensive annual report demonstrating how they meet or exceed these standards. This self-assessment allows organizations to reflect on their contributions, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate their successes in alignment with community values.

Pillar 1: Leadership and Accountability

Chapters are expected to foster leadership development at the individual and organizational level while maintaining strong governance, risk management, and compliance with university and inter/national policies.

Pillar 2: Scholarship and Academic Achievement

Academic success is a cornerstone of fraternity and sorority membership. Chapters are expected to promote a culture of scholarship and support members in reaching their academic goals.

Pillar 3: Community Engagement and Service

Fraternities and sororities play a vital role in building a more engaged and service-oriented campus and local community.

Pillar 4: Inclusion, Wellness and Belonging

A thriving chapter prioritizes an inclusive environment where members feel supported mentally, physically, and emotionally.
