Bio
Dr. Iwan Sianturi is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at SUNY Oswego. He coordinates the Adolescence Mathematics Education program and the Curriculum and Instruction Advisement Center. He was selected as one of 20 SUNY Academic Momentum Fellows working with SUNY leadership to advance student success and academic momentum initiatives across SUNY’s 64 campuses.
At SUNY Oswego, Dr. Sianturi teaches elementary and secondary mathematics methods and STEM education courses and supervises the Mathematics Practicum for Grades 7-12. He also contributes to institutional and statewide initiatives led by SUNY leadership that focus on student placement, gateway-course completion, and academic momentum.
Since 2012, Dr. Sianturi has taught mathematics and mathematics education in Indonesia, Taiwan, and the United States. His experience includes teaching across K-12 settings in Indonesia and at the postsecondary level in Taiwan and the United States. Before joining SUNY Oswego, he taught mathematics content, mathematics methods, and field experience courses at Indiana University Bloomington for five years. Since 2018, he has served as a co-investigator with MathsThroughStories.org, an international research-based initiative that explores the integration of stories and literacy into mathematics teaching and learning.
His scholarship focuses on mathematical thinking, number sense, spatial reasoning, problem-solving strategies, STEM education, mathematics curricula and textbooks used in Finland, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States, culturally responsive mathematics teaching, mathematics through storytelling, and the preparation of mathematics teachers. His research has been published in leading international journals, including Educational Studies in Mathematics, the British Journal of Educational Psychology, the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, the International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, and Mathematics Education Research Journal, among others.
