Bio

Dr. Bonita Hampton is a long-time member of the State University of New York’s (SUNY) system. She has been a faculty member in Oswego’s Department of Curriculum & Instruction since 2001. Enthusiastic about empowering future educators to develop critical thinking skills, resiliency, and independence, she teaches Foundations of Education, a course focusing on the impact of race, class, gender, sexuality, and disability on children in the educational system. Her research interest also focuses on HIV/AIDS among women.

Dr. Hampton participated in SUNY Buffalo’s system 1975 -1998, as an adjunct professor in the Departments of American Studies/Women’s Studies where she also earned her BA, MA, and PhD.

To honor her advocacy and passion for social justice, she has received awards from SUNY Buffalo's Department of American Studies, The National Women’s Studies Association, Everywoman Opportunity Center, and SUNY Oswego’s ALANA Program, for her academic work and community activism on behalf of students, people in prison and the struggle against HIV/AIDS. She is particularly grateful for the mentorship of Eugene L. Pierce, Dr's Sherri Darrow, Elizabeth L. Kennedy, Lillian S. Williams, Ellen DuBois, Lisa Albrecht, Brenda A. Miller, June E. Licence, and the inspiration of her five children, Kevin, Tyrone, Regina, Chris, and her late son Kenneth.
