Bio:
Dr. Doreen Mazzye is an Associate Literacy Professor and Childhood Program Coordinator in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego. She teaches literacy courses in the Master of Science in Teaching Residency and the Childhood Programs. She serves The Reading League as a founding board member and supports the organization through educator preparation reform toward the science of reading. She is passionate about teaching pre-service and in-service teachers the science of reading (SoR) so that all children will be effectively taught to read and write. Additionally, she is the parent of a child with dyslexia, which perpetuated her ardent advocacy for the application of a structured literacy approach to teaching reading and writing. Before her time in higher education, Mazzye was also an inclusive classroom teacher in 3rd and 4th grades.
Dr. Mazzye holds a Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo in Curriculum, Instruction, & the Science of Learning. Her research presentations and publications examine literacy instruction based on the SoR in residency and traditional models of teacher preparation, the impact of professional development and coaching in SoR on oral reading fluency outcomes, and how the implementation of SoR mitigates learning loss. Dr. Mazzye has presented for International Dyslexia Association, The Reading League, Literacy Research Association, Global Conference on Educational Research, National Professional Development Schools Association, and American Reading Forum, and many other venues. Dr. Mazzye is an experienced professional development provider and consultant for many districts throughout Central and Western New York. She is also an expert reviewer for the SUNY New Paltz Science of Reading Fundamentals Microcredential, committee member of the SUNY Science of Reading Technical Advisory Group, and a board member of the Stronger Together: Alliance for the Reading Science in Higher Education (STARS: HE).

Professor Mazzye is interested in the gap between scientifically based literacy research and teacher practice. She is dedicated to ensure that pre-service teachers deeply understand principles of research and theory to benefit future practice of literacy instruction.
