Discovering Who I Am / Self-Assessments

Career Services offers a variety of assessment tools that help students identify their strengths, skills, values, abilities, and interests. Workshops can be delivered after students complete the assessments on Focus2. We can process their results and identify ways to incorporate the information into their academic plan.

The other option for this presentation is an overview of all the self-assessments available on campus through 1:1 Career Coaching meetings. These self-assessments include StrengthsQuestTM, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory®.

Exploring Majors & Best-Fit Careers

College is a time for exploring, growing and learning. Deciding on a career path and academic program can be a challenging decision. This workshop will help students learn about strategies, resources and services available to research, explore and discover the life they are meant to live.

Graduate School: Explore the Process

Perhaps you need another degree to be competitive, or you just love learning! We can help you figure out if you really need to attend graduate school, discuss the process and timeline, and help you research the best programs out there!

Interview Skills & Mock Interviews

This workshop will provide an overview of what students need to know to succeed in an interview! Topics include how to match your skills and experiences to the organization’s needs, preparing for the tough questions, making the best first impression and the critical follow-up.

Job & Internship Search Strategies / Networking

This workshop will review the many things students can do to ensure they are successful in the job search process - both a high-tech and a high-touch approach, with a focus on networking and conducting a gap analysis between employer expectations and student skills/experience.

Networking, Personal Branding and LinkedIn

Professional networking can provide you with potential employment opportunities, referrals and inside information on your career field. The more contacts you have, the more likely you’ll hear about job leads, and have a contact who can vouch for you. It may also lead to future employment and internship opportunities!

Compensation Negotiation

Take charge of your financial future by learning how to negotiate!

Negotiating compensation can be tricky, whether it is part of the job search process or in the case of an individual working for an employer and wishing to receive a raise. It is very common for many employers to have set a starting salary with no room for negotiation, especially entry-level positions; however, with other employers there may be room to negotiate.

SUNY Oswego Career Services has partnered with AAUW, a leading national authority on the topic of compensation negotiation, to provide you with the best tools and strategies that exist. The purpose of going through this process is to:

  • Empower you to successfully and confidently negotiate your salary and benefits
  • Ensure your compensation is aligned with your worth and market value
Marketing Yourself / Résumés & Cover Letters

High-Demand Skills

Nationally, employers continue to rate students low in terms of workforce readiness and skill development. We can help your students understand what employers are seeking in general, and specifically within a certain major or career field. We can also help your students conduct an analysis of their skills, determine where the gaps are, and develop strategies to get what skills and experience they need to be competitive.
