Dear Members of the SUNY Oswego Community–
As we bring another academic year to a close, our campus shines brightly as a living celebration of learning, discovery and purpose. Across every discipline and stage, SUNY Oswego students have demonstrated not only intellectual excellence but also the courage to share their ideas, the creativity to shape their world and the character to lead within it.
Throughout this season of achievement, we have witnessed the heart of our academic mission in full bloom through these and other wonderful events on our campus:
- Quest 2025, our annual academic symposium, showcased the vitality and breadth of research, performance, and innovation—from deep scientific inquiry to artistic expression. Dr. Lars Rudstam of Cornell University’s keynote address connected our region’s environmental realities to global scientific frontiers, reminding us of the importance of viewing local challenges through a global lens.
- Our graduate scholars impressed us at the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, skillfully distilling their complex research into accessible and compelling stories. Their topics—ranging from sustainable materials to behavioral wellness and user-centered design—demonstrated a commitment to making knowledge both impactful and inclusive.
- Our inaugural TEDxSUNY Oswego event, under the theme of "Progress," amplified the powerful, personal ideas of students and community members alike. Born from the dream of one graduate student, TEDx became a platform for many voices and visions—a testament to the power of ideas to inspire change.
- Thanks to the outstanding work of our students, faculty, and staff in the School of Communication, Media, and the Arts (SCMA), we’ve broken into the Top 50 of the 2025 Broadcast Education Association (BEA) national rankings for overall broadcast education programs. Since 2023, we’ve advanced from #81 to #67, and now proudly rank #48. We continue to lead the SUNY system at #1 and are ranked #4 in New York State—behind only Syracuse, Hofstra, and Ithaca. In the specialty categories, we’re ranked #16 in Audio and #28 in News. The BEA is the premier international academic media organization, making this recognition especially meaningful.
- At this year’s Honors Convocation, we celebrated the perseverance, excellence and transformative journeys of our highest-performing students. Their achievements stand as a powerful reflection of the outstanding mentorship, dedication and support provided daily by our faculty and staff.
And, in just a few days, on May 17, we will gather to celebrate our graduates at commencement—a joyful culmination of years of hard work, resilience and personal growth. To the Class of 2025, whose lives have been transformed at SUNY Oswego, know that you carry with you not just a degree, but the hopes and confidence of an entire community that believes deeply in your potential to ignite new possibilities and to lead and shape a brighter future for our region and beyond.
To our returning students, faculty and staff: Thank you for contributing your talents, your energy and your unwavering commitment to SUNY Oswego’s mission. You are an essential part of what makes this university extraordinary.
As we look ahead, let us continue to lift one another, challenge one another and celebrate the enduring spirit that defines SUNY Oswego.
