Our Research

Research is a central part of the CLASE experience. Students work alongside faculty mentors to explore questions, test ideas and contribute to new knowledge across the sciences, social sciences, humanities and engineering.

From laboratory experiments and field studies to creative scholarship and data analysis, research gives students the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom while developing valuable skills in discovery, problem solving and communication.

Undergraduate Research

Many CLASE students participate in undergraduate research during their time at Oswego. Working with faculty mentors, students design projects, conduct experiments, analyze results and present their findings.

These experiences help students deepen their understanding of their field while building skills that are highly valued by employers and graduate programs.

Faculty Collaboration

CLASE faculty are active scholars and researchers who involve students in their work. Students may contribute to research in laboratories, assist with fieldwork, analyze data, or collaborate on publications and presentations.

This close mentorship gives students insight into how research happens in professional settings while building strong academic relationships.

Field Research and Discovery

Research often takes students beyond the classroom and into the world. Students conduct environmental studies at places like Rice Creek Field Station, participate in archaeological digs, gather data in communities and explore complex systems in real-world environments.

These experiences allow students to engage directly with the subjects they study.

Sharing Research

Students regularly present their work through campus research symposia, conferences and collaborative projects. Presenting research helps students strengthen their communication skills while sharing their discoveries with broader academic and professional communities.

A big part of our philosophy here in the Biological Sciences Department and the college in general is you learn by doing. Going through all the steps of this scientific process is the only way to develop scientists. It’s important that students see themselves as part of the scientific process.
