While the accessibility of digital materials and virtual events have been a main focus over the past couple of years, it is important to model inclusive practices in face-to-face settings, as well. The following tips were developed to help provide a better experience for in-person event attendees.
Accessibility Practices for Presenters at In-person Events
- Use a microphone when presenting and have a microphone available for questions.
- Design slide decks with accessibility in mind
- Keep content concise
- Use bullets
- Font should be 24pt or larger
- Colors should meet contrast standards
- Verbally describe all images like the content, trends, and key data points in charts and graphs
- Build in breaks once an hour
- Activate captions on any videos played during a presentation (and consider turning on captions for the slides too)
- Keep instructions on the screen for any activities you want participants to engage in
- Share slide decks electronically with participants (ideally in advance)
