Frontend Web refers to website content created and managed through online platforms, rather than by directly writing code. This type of content is typically added or edited using a word editor, similar to what you find in Microsoft Word. Platforms include Brightspace (Learning Management System), Drupal (Content Management System), LakerLife, Google Classroom, and WordPress.
The Five Principles
- Identify Content Types: Styles (headings), Bullets (lists), Hyperlinks. Content types are displayed and labeled consistently.
- Provide Text Equivalents: Provide Alt text. Do not use images of text. Make sure linked audio/video have captions, transcripts, and visual description.
- Use Color Carefully: Contrast, Sensory Characteristics
- Provide Descriptive Hyperlinks: Link purpose and location
- Use Clear Language: Overview, Concise and specific, avoid jargon
Additional Considerations
- Provide Consistent Structure: provide a document title
- Identify the Language: Set this for the document and any sections that are different from the primary language of the document
- Provide error identification, prevention and handling: Include a signature with contact information, or include an instructor page with information about how to contact you
- Typography: minimum font size 12pt or 16px (poster text should be larger); do not use all caps; left align text when possible; use space between paragraphs
- Verify Accessibility: Use Ally in Brightspace. Content that is uploaded (like documents or slide decks) should be checked for accessibility prior to uploading to the LMS. Do not link to docs that are not accessible.
