Captioning Videos in Panopto

Any video or audio files you upload to Panopto will have machine-generated captioning applied. This service is included with our Panopto contract at no additional charge.

  • To get started, setup an account in Panopto. The easiest way to do this is in Brightspace. Setting up the service will activate an account in Panopto, set up a folder for your videos, and also give permission to your students to be able to view your content.
  • Once you have an account setup, you can start uploading content. You can upload content one of two ways:
  • The content will be captioned shortly after they are uploaded. Timing will depend on server availability and length of video, but shouldn’t take more than an hour.
  • Open the video in the editor when you are done to make sure the captions are accurate and correct any mistakes.

Other Accessibility Concerns

  • Make sure that the color contrast of any text in any multimedia content is accessible. The source material for your projects (any documents or slide decks) need to be accessible before they are used in a video.
  • Make sure your content does not trigger seizures, dizziness, migraines or nausea. Specifically, avoid content that flashes, particularly red colors as more people are sensitive to that. More details can be found in this W3C article referencing the WCAG 2.2 requirements on this topic.
