All course outlines should be submitted to UCC for review and eventual approval by the Faculty Assembly. This includes new courses (and course numbers), revised/updated courses (with the same course number), changes to existing course prerequisites, or existing courses whose numbers are being changed.
Procedures at the department level
- An individual (course originator) or team develops, updates, or revises the course outline and secures department chair and Curriculum Committee approval. Departments may review, deliberate, and vote on the course proposals before submission to Curriculog. Additionally, department chairs or program directors are expected to keep a copy of this course outline and related communication on file within the department.
- Once courses are approved at the department level, use Curriculog to select an appropriate proposal form and submit it. The submission will again require official approval from the Chair or program Director in Curriculog. Videos on Introduction to Curriculog and pointers for filling out proposal forms are coming soon.
- The language of the proposal must be free of gender and cultural bias, according to the Faculty Assembly Resolution passed on April 2, 1980.
UCC course review process
- During the regular semester, UCC meets every two weeks. During the meeting, each course proposal is reviewed, voted on, and carefully reviewed by all UCC members for gaps and concerns.
- In most cases (unless there are significant concerns), the course submissions are not rejected. If members have concerns regarding a specific course, the UCC chair contacts the department chair, course originator, or additional contacts for clarification and/or revisions until the course is ready for approval. All revisions must be sent to the UCC chair, as course originators and department chairs cannot revise in Curriculog.
- After voting, UCC will report the approved course to the Faculty Assembly at the next FA meeting.
- Final approval is assumed after a two-week period from the FA report date.
Approval of courses beyond UCC
Approval of courses for the following programs is separate from the UCC process and should be arranged elsewhere. For example,
- For courses for General Education, contact the director of General Education.
- For courses listed in the SUNY Oswego course registration space, or in the Course Bulletin, contact the Registrar’s Office.
- For sets of courses to be included in specific programs, minors, or majors, see the director or chair of the program or department. Program approval occurs with the Academic Policies Council.
