Course Cancellation, Drops, and Withdrawals

Before the Semester Starts

Degree-seeking undergraduate students may cancel their fall or spring semester registration by email only prior to the first day of classes. For Fall 2025, the last day email withdrawals will be accepted is August 22, 2025.

  1. Keep this page open and open a new tab in the same browser.
  2. Log in to your oswego.edu email.
  3. Complete the Cancellation of Registration form.

If you change your mind and wish to register for Fall 2025 after submitting the form, email the Registrar’s Office at [email protected] to request reactivation of your record.

New matriculated first-time students for Fall 2025 should contact Undergraduate Admissions at 315.312.2250.

After Classes Begin

Drop a Course

Students may drop full-semester courses online through September 15 using myOswego. Courses removed during this period will not appear on a transcript. It is the student’s responsibility to drop courses they are no longer attending. For questions about billing or aid implications, consult Student Accounts and Financial Aid.

Withdraw from a Course

September 16–December 5: Course withdrawal is requested in myOswego under the Registration tab. A W grade will appear on the transcript and a $20 fee is added to the semester bill.

Withdraw from the University

Matriculated (degree-seeking) undergraduates who wish to withdraw from the university after the term begins must contact the Dean of Students at 315.312.5483 to make appropriate arrangements for a College Withdrawal. Withdrawals after the posted drop period (see the Academic Calendar) will show a W on the transcript.

Graduate Students & Non-Degree Undergraduates

Graduate students and non-degree undergraduates should use the course drop/withdrawal process in myOswego to drop all registered courses.

Winter & Summer Sessions

  • All students can drop their last course online through the posted drop period.
  • Summer: Drop periods vary by class length but typically run through the first day of class.
  • Winter: The last day to drop is the day before the session begins.

When a course is dropped during the drop period, no grade appears on the transcript.

Transferring to Another Institution

The Transfer tab in Degree Works provides access to SUNY Transfer Tools. The primary purpose is to provide a way to run "what-if" audits against other schools or programs throughout SUNY. You can also view existing transfer equivalents at Oswego and other SUNYs.

1. My Courses section

Gather, input, and review your entire academic record.

Courses from your current school automatically populate in this area. To include coursework from other SUNY schools, use the "SUNY School Courses" tool in the left-hand navigation. Clicking the plus sign ("Add SUNY xyz") will add the school to the list and search for your SUNY ID and coursework in Degree Works at the selected school(s). If found, coursework will populate (note: failed, withdrawn, and audited courses will not be included). If not found, you can manually enter courses using the plus sign at the bottom of the school listing ("Add a class").

The left-hand navigation also includes the "Non-SUNY School Courses" tool, where you can manually add coursework from non-SUNY schools.

When your My Courses content has been reviewed and completed, you are ready to run a Transfer What If Audit.

2. Run a Transfer "What If" Audit

The Search tool allows you to search for programs across multiple schools or multiple programs at one school. "Or" logic is used within a parameter (e.g., School A or School B), and "and" logic is used across parameters (e.g., Academic Discipline Z and (School A or School B)). The Academic Discipline parameter is broad and usually yields more results than the SUNY Transfer Path parameter. You can sort search results by clicking any column header.

Select up to three programs at a time and click "Compare" to run the Transfer What If Audit. A summary page will appear, showing progress bars. These bars vary by institution and are more useful when comparing programs within the same school.

Click the "View transfer detail" link to see the full Transfer What If Audit, starting with course equivalencies. Audits for baccalaureate, Associate of Arts, and Associate of Science programs will show SUNY General Education Requirements and Major requirements. Even if no course equivalent is found, SUNY Gen Ed categories will appear as complete if shown as complete on your current school's audit.

Additional resources are linked at the top of the audit, including an "Apply Now" link to the SUNY application and a "Find a Transfer Advisor" link for your school of interest.

3. Course Equivalent Tool

The "Course Equivalent" tool lets you search for established transfer equivalents across SUNY. It shows equivalents at your current school and allows you to search what other SUNYs have established for your courses.

Transfer Equivalency Information

View SUNY Oswego's Transfer Course Guide. Approved SUNY GenEd courses can be found on the SUNY Student Mobility Site, using the Approved SUNY-GER Course Dashboards tab.

  • If you're looking for an approved Foreign Language General Education course, ensure the course is equivalent to Oswego’s foreign language level 102. Oswego’s requirement is more rigorous than SUNY’s. Exceptions apply for students with an articulation agreement tied to an approved SUNY two-year degree; in that case, level 101 is sufficient. The Registrar's Office must have an official transcript showing the posted degree.
  • If you're looking for an approved Fine and Performing Arts General Education course, make sure the course(s) total at least three credits. Some courses meet the requirement but may only be worth one or two credits, so more than one may be needed.
  • If a course is listed on either of the above sites and you plan to transfer it back to Oswego, you must complete an off-campus study approval form. It only requires your signature and your advisor’s. For questions, contact the Registrar’s Office at 315.312.2180.

Note: For graduate-level transfer credit, refer to the Graduate Studies site.
