Schedule Build

A good schedule build prioritizes offering courses necessary for students to meet academic requirements in a timely manner. Creating a complete and accurate schedule before it’s posted online reduces registration errors, preserves priority registration integrity, and decreases departmental workload related to overrides and conflicts. 

Fall 2026 schedule build timeline

  • Week of 12/1: Schedule Build Workbooks distributed to departments (see more information below)
  • Tues 1/20: Updated "musttake" data distributed
  • Mon 1/26: Start of term
  • Fri 1/30: Updated schedules due to Dean’s Office (cc [email protected])
  • Wed 2/25: Restriction workbooks distributed
  • Wed 3/4: Restrictions due to Registrar ([email protected])
  • Mon 3/16: Fall 2026 schedule available online
  • Mon 4/6: Advance Registration opens
  • Mon 4/27: Non-matriculated registration opens

Using the Schedule Build Workbooks

"Musttakes" Tab:

  • Lists courses required by students’ programs
  • Counts are among Spring 2026 registered students as of November 24.
  • Data do not reflect the needs of new students entering in Spring 2026 (nor Fall 2026).
  • Counts of sections offered and seats available reflect Fall 2025 offerings (to be updated in the sections worksheet).
  • Updated "musttake" data will be distributed the week of August 17 and will better reflect enrolled student class standing and course needs, including Fall 2026 incoming students.

Notes on Student Data ("musttakes" tab):

  • Counts by class (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior): the original (November 24) workbook reflects class standing (earned hours) as of November 24; interpret accordingly (e.g., today’s freshmen may be sophomores in Spring 2026).
  • Updated "musttake" data reflect current Spring ’26 registration.
  • "UD_elig" indicates eligibility for upper division coursework.
  • Updated "musttake" data reflect upper-division eligibility based on inclusion of in-progress coursework.
  • "GD", "syr_maj", "OL_maj" provide breakout counts for Graduate, Syracuse, and Online majors

Notes on Course Data:

  • "ol" and "syr" reflect the number of Online and Syracuse seats; these are breakouts already included in the total seats column.
  • Courses marked "I" in the "active" column are inactive
  • You may see courses that were "musttakes" in older program versions; this can indicate current students still enrolled under an older catalog.
  • Pre- and Co-requisites help estimate demand (e.g., if 200 need course B but only 150 need prerequisite A, demand is likely 50)
  • “when” shows offering patterns (09 = Falls, 01 = Springs, @ = every term, !@ = inconsistent)

"_ehist" Tab:

  • Enrollment data from last three Spring terms
  • Flags GenEd, musttake, and maytake courses
  • Includes sections offered, seat counts, and fill rates

"Sections" Tab:

Used to revise/update Fall 2026 schedule

  • Use delivery options: Face to Face, Asynchronous Online, Synchronous Online, or Hybrid
  • Do not add or delete CRNs; mark deletions in the "delete" column
  • Use "M" in section if for majors only
  • Only labs should have specific room numbers; others use room needs
  • Waitlisting: use “Y” in waitlist_YN column for automated waitlists
  • Campus field only needs changes for moves to/from Syracuse or Off Campus

Excel Usage Tip: When sorting data in Excel, be sure to select the entire sheet to avoid misaligning or corrupting data rows.

Course Materials

The College Store has implemented "Timber Adopt" to provide online submission of course materials. Questions about Timber Adopt or textbook options can be directed to the bookstore at [email protected] or 315-312-2260.

A good schedule build is one that prioritizes the offering of courses necessary for students to meet their academic requirements in a timely manner. Creating a complete and accurate schedule prior to being posted online, when students begin using Registration Planning tools, reduces registration errors, preserves the intent of priority registration (Seniors first, etc.) and reduces departmental workload associated with overrides, registration errors, and resolving room and time conflicts.

Class Times

The Commissioner's Regulations state that a three-credit-hour course must meet for a total of 2,250 minutes. It may be necessary (because of a holiday, for example) to schedule an additional class or to add time to each class meeting to meet this regulation. If such is necessary, the instructor will inform the class as to how this time will be made up.

No more than 10% of total daytime classes should be scheduled in any single timeslot. The timeslots outlined below apply to daytime classes only. Evening, asynchronous online, off-campus, labs, and studio classes are excluded from the 10% time-spread evaluation.

Labs and studios that do not follow these timeslots should be scheduled to span no more than two timeslots and should begin or end at a regular timeslot. Timeslots below marked with an asterisk (*) are prime time and should be avoided for labs when possible.

MWF Timeslots

  • 8:00–8:55
  • 9:10–10:05
  • 10:20–11:15*
  • 11:30–12:25*
  • 12:40–1:35*
  • 1:50–2:45*
  • 3:00–3:55

TR Timeslots

  • 8:00–9:20
  • 9:35–10:55*
  • 11:10–12:30*
  • 12:45–2:05*
  • 2:20–3:40
  • 3:55–5:15

Recommended MW Times

These are the minimum durations recommended for MW (Monday/Wednesday) class meetings:

  • 3:00–4:20
  • 4:35–5:55
  • 6:10–7:30

Minimum Meeting Durations

  • 3-credit class (Mon, Thurs, Fri): minimum 2 hours 45 minutes
  • 3-credit class (Tues or Wed): minimum 2 hours 30 minutes
  • 2-credit class: minimum 1 hour 45 minutes
  • 1-credit class: minimum 55 minutes

One-Day-a-Week Classes

  • Should not begin before 3:00 PM unless using regular time slots as outlined above.
  • All times listed include a two-hour final exam.

Final Exam Schedules

Final examinations will be given in your regular classroom, when possible. Exam schedules are based on the day of the week and time of day the class first meets. Select an option below to see the exam schedule. Dates/times are subject to change.

Final examinations for courses that have a zero (0) credit discussion and/or laboratory section will be given according to the schedule for the lecture section. Faculty who are teaching a laboratory course and need a time for a final, please contact the Registrar's Office via email at [email protected].

Please Note:

  1. Examination time and date for classes that meet on an irregular schedule will be scheduled during the class time most closely fitting the regular schedule. These exams may have adjusted times because of conflicts, so be sure to consult with your instructor.
  2. Common final examinations will be given on Monday, December 8th, from 8 to 10 am. Your instructors will announce the room.
  3. Evening classes (beginning after 4 PM) will be scheduled during the normal class time in Final Exams Week.
  4. Exam days and times are displayed on myOswego after the registration "Add" deadline each semester.

Room reservations and classroom changes

Room reservations can be made online at ems.oswego.edu.

All classroom changes should be submitted through the department by email to [email protected]. Here are instructions to find an alternative classroom:

  • Go to: events.oswego.edu
  • Click the head icon in the upper right to log in using your Laker Net ID and Email password
  • Select "Locations" in the left-hand navigation
  • In the "Date" field, select a date within the same day of the week as your course
  • Click "Add/Remove Locations", then in the pop-up, choose the "Views" tab
  • Select "General use classrooms" and click "Update Locations"

  • Open and re-save the file in Excel for best results
