Update from the President - March 2024

Internal Engagement

  • Attended the General Faculty meeting, where I presented the President’s report.
  • Held two meetings to follow up on action steps from a meeting held in late January with members of the Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department. These meetings were attended by Vice President for Student Affairs Kathleen Kerr, Interim Vice President for Communications and Marketing Karen Crowe, Deputy to the President Mary Toale, Director of Operations in the Office of the President Jamal Coleman, and Vice President for Administration and Finance Vicki Furlong, and Chief of Police Scott Swayze.
  • Led the President’s Council meeting that convened SUNY Oswego's leaders from various departments and divisions.
  • Participated in the Student Association (SA) Senate meeting, presided over by SA Vice President Oghenetega Adjoh. During the meeting, I discussed Vision 4040 and campus climate. The meeting was also attended by Vice President for Student Affairs Kathleen Kerr, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Gabriel Marshall, Interim Vice President for Communications and Marketing Karen Crowe, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Kendra Cadogan, Chief of Police Scott Swayze, and Director of Operations in the Office of the President Jamal Coleman.
  • Led the President's Facilities Planning Group meeting.
  • Presented the President’s Report at the SUNY Oswego College Council meeting.
  • Presented the President’s Report at the Oswego University Foundation Board meeting.
  • Provided remarks at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ceremony.
  • Held a follow-up meeting regarding the 2022 Periodic State Fire Inspections. The meeting was attended by Vice President for Administration and Finance Vicki Furlong, Associate Vice President for Facilities Services John Fields, and Chief Environmental Health & Safety Officer Kenneth Ayhens.
  • Hosted SUNY Chancellor John King, during his visit to the campus to announce a $10m system-wide investment in mental health funding support for SUNY campuses.
  • Visited the astronomy site at the Rice Creek Field Station and toured the facility with Professor Kamal Mohamad of the Department of Biological Sciences, Kristen Haynes, assistant director for Rice Creek Field Station, and Director of Operations in the Office of the President Jamal Coleman.
  • Held a meeting with Faculty Assembly Chair Liz Schmitt, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Scott Furlong, as part of our shared governance process.
  • Visited with faculty in the Department of Mathematics and had discussions on a range of issues in support of student success and our campus mission. The meeting was facilitated by Professor and Department Chair Pretty Tripathi and attended by the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Kristen Croyle.
  • Held a meeting with our deans, attended by Provost Scott Furlong, Vice President for Administration and Finance Vicki Furlong, Deputy to the President for Strategy and Planning Mary Toale, and Associate Provost Rameen Mohammed to discuss campus vision and academic planning.
  • Met with Father John (Newman Center).

External Engagement

  • Held discussions with Strategic Planning facilitator, Dr. Timothy Mottet, our external facilitator from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), regarding the university’s strategic plan and its upcoming phases.
  • Attended the NCAA orientation meeting for new presidents and chancellors via Zoom.
  • Attended the 2024 Education Advisory Board (EAB) presidential roundtable meeting.
  • Had a follow-up discussion with Dan Gurney, Oswego Town supervisor, to provide updates on our plan to decrease the number of fire calls.
  • Attended the 2024 NYS Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, & Asian Legislative Caucus meeting.
  • Held a meeting with InterFaith Works to discuss the difficult dialogue project and engagement with the university community. The meeting was also attended by Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Kendra Cadogan, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Scott Furlong, and Affirmative Action Officer and Deputy CDIO Anneke McEvoy.
  • Met with Swift Rails leadership team to discuss a high-tech, green, rapid transit system.
  • Attended the SUNY Presidents' meeting via Zoom.
  • Met with Jim Dowd, president of Pathfinder Bank, accompanied by Vice President for University Advancement Mary Canale and Assistant Vice President Jennifer Hill.
  • Held a meeting with Mudd Murphy, the leader of the Tithe My Shoes project and former mayor of Central Square.
  • Met with Syracuse University Chancellor/President Kent Syverud and some members of his leadership team.
  • Attended the CenterState CEO Director Orientation via Zoom as a new member of the Board.
  • Led the Zoom meeting of the Oswego Micron Strategy Steering Committee, comprising various private and public-sector agencies involved in preparing for Micron’s investment in Central New York.
  • Hosted a meeting of the Oswego Micron Strategy Steering Committee leadership team with Empire State Development Corporation leadership team led by its Chief Operating Officer Kevin Younis at our Syracuse Campus.
  • Attended the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce (GOFCC) Annual Meeting along with Vice President for Administration and Finance Vicki Furlong, Director of Operations in the Office of the President Jamal Coleman, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Scott Furlong, Vice President for Enrollment Management Cory Bezek, Director of Career Services Gary Morris, Executive Director of Career Services Jennifer Hill, and Internship & Student Employment Coordinator Tina Cooper.
  • Attended the SUNY Comprehensive President's meeting via Zoom.
  • Attended the American Council on Education (ACE) Presidents and Chancellors Summit.
