Dear Members of the SUNY Oswego Community–
As we begin a new academic year, I want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fostering an environment where free speech, academic freedom, and open dialogue are not only valued at SUNY Oswego but are also vigorously protected and encouraged. These principles are at the heart of our identity as an institution of higher learning and remain essential to nurturing a climate where inquiry, creativity, and critical thinking thrive.
At SUNY Oswego, we believe deeply in the free exchange of ideas and the pursuit of knowledge. Our policies, grounded in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, are designed to ensure that every member of our community can engage in dialogue and express viewpoints safely, respectfully, and constructively. Importantly, these protections apply to all constitutionally protected speech, regardless of content or perspective. The University remains a neutral venue, providing the same level of safety, respect, and fairness to all speakers.
To support this commitment, SUNY Oswego maintains clear guidelines on the appropriate “time, place, and manner” for expressions of speech. These guidelines are intended to preserve the integrity of our academic mission, minimize disruptions, and ensure that all voices have the opportunity to be heard.
I encourage every member of our community to become familiar with these policies and guidelines, which have been developed in consultation with the SUNY System. By understanding and following them, we strengthen our capacity to engage with one another thoughtfully, meaningfully, and respectfully.
Free speech is the cornerstone of our democracy and a defining value of our campus culture. Your participation in sustaining an environment of respectful discourse is vital to who we are as Lakers. Together, we ensure that dialogue, debate, and discovery continue to flourish at SUNY Oswego.
Remain well,
Peter O. Nwosu
President
