Dear Members of the SUNY Oswego Community–

It is with great sadness that I share news of the passing of Howard Gordon, a beloved member of our SUNY Oswego family, who left us this past Friday. Howard’s remarkable presence touched the lives of generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all.

Howard was part of our campus for more than 50 years. From his days as a student in the early 1970s to his influential roles as counselor, assistant dean, assistant provost, and longtime executive assistant to the president, Howard’s contributions have shaped the very fabric of our community, and I got the opportunity to experience this when I became president of our university. He was a gentle and thoughtful leader and a kind human being.

His work went well beyond his official roles. In 1986, he co-founded the African, Latino, Asian, and Native American (ALANA) Student Leadership Conference, which still attracts hundreds of participants from across the region each year. He also played a key role in launching the Return to Oz reunion of color, a treasured tradition that has strengthened our bonds as a campus community.

Howard’s dedication earned him national recognition when he received the 2012 Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education. His leadership as a role model and mentor was clear not only through his professional service but also in his published works, including The African in Me: Stories, which shows his strong commitment to sharing stories of Black lives and resilience in Upstate New York.

His service to the broader community was equally impactful. As a leader of the State Employees Federated Appeal campaign, he worked to support initiatives that improved many lives. Howard was also honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service and the Oswego Alumni Association Lifetime Award of Merit — fitting recognition for a man whose life embodied service, fairness, and compassion.

Above all, Howard will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, and genuine ability to listen. He was a mentor, a storyteller, and an encouragement to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 11, at the Greater Evangelical Church of God in Christ, located at 4325 S. Salina Street, Syracuse.

  • Viewing: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Service: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, 940 Comstock Avenue, Syracuse.

On behalf of the entire SUNY Oswego community, I offer our deepest condolences to Howard’s family and loved ones. We are forever grateful for the profound impact he made on our university and everyone who walked through its doors.

Remain well,

Peter O. Nwosu
President
