SUNY Oswego is an outstanding place to begin your preparation for a health care career. Health care is an interdisciplinary profession which requires significant skills in human interaction and understanding. Patients are best served by practitioners who are well grounded in the liberal arts, social sciences, physical sciences, and natural sciences.

Oswego offers a range of undergraduate majors and minors that students can study to obtain the requirements for admission into health science programs. Through a combination of classroom theory and practical experiences tailored to meet what health science programs demand, we expose you to the life-changing challenge of working and learning in the community and around the globe. Our supportive faculty help students form the knowledge and skills necessary to support their career and life goals.

Preparing for Pre-Health Studies at Oswego

Pre-Med/Pre-Health Scholarships

The Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) works with Oswego's Development Office to administer scholarships and awards to Oswego students.

Dr. Walter Freund Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Walter Freund Memorial Scholarship was established by a $60,000 gift to the SUNY Oswego from Annaliese Freund in memory of Dr. Walter Freund, MD. The annual income from this gift is to be used to "assist financially in the education of one or more students each year who are taking premedical courses." Each award ranges from $2,000-4,000 and students may receive the award more than once by reapplying the next year.

MCAT Prep Scholarship

HPAC and the Office of University Advancement help qualified Oswego pre-med students pay for the Kaplan MCAT Prep course. Applications are accepted each year between Oct 1 and the 3rd Fri of October. Eligible students must be planning to take the MCAT and applying to medical school during the next cycle (the following Spring/Summer) and have demonstrated financial need as determined by their FAFSA and the Financial Aid office. Thomas C. Mahl, MD ’80 Scholarship

The Thomas C. Mahl, MD ’80 Scholarship was established by Thomas C. Mahl, MD ’80 in perpetual support of undergraduates who have an interest in and potential for a career in a further professional degree in the health sciences (medicine, dentistry, etc.) Through this support, Dr. Mahl hopes to foster improved health in all populations. The award is $2,000 and is renewable for up to a total of 3 years if a student is in good academic standing and continues to meet all other criteria.

Touhsaent Family Scholarship for Pre-Veterinary Science

The Touhsaent Family Scholarship for Pre-Veterinary Science was established by the Touhsaent family to encourage and assist SUNY Oswego’s Pre-Veterinary Science students with significant financial need. The award is $1,000 and is renewable for up to a total of 3 years if a student is in good academic standing and continues to meet all other criteria.

Our Health Professions Advisory Committee offers individualized advising, organizes events, and supports clubs such as the Pre-Health Care Club, Pre-Veterinary Medicine Club, and Pre-Optometry Club.

Through our EXCEL office, we provide internships in health care settings allowing you to experience active, dynamic learning while you confirm your career options, boost your resume, learn new skills, and apply the knowledge you learned in your coursework.
