SUNY Oswego offers a multitude of semester and year-long study abroad opportunities in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Immerse yourself in another culture and enhance your fluency in a target language. The college offers many scholarships to help cover travel costs for majors/minors.

Study Abroad in Germany

Osnabrück

Osnabrück is a medium-sized city of about 160,000 people.  It is located in the state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), in the northwest of Germany. There are more than 20,000 students at the university and the university of applied sciences.   Oswego students can take courses in English and German in a wide variety of subjects.

By taking at least one course in German, Oswego students are automatically eligible for a Modern Languages and Literatures GETGO Grant.

Kempten

With about 70,000 people, Kempten is the largest town of the beautiful Allgäu region.  It is located in the state of Bayern (Bavaria), in the south of Germany.  Approximately 5,000 students are enrolled at the university of applied sciences. Oswego students can take courses in English and German in a wide variety of subjects.

By taking at least one course in German, Oswego students are automatically eligible for a Modern Languages and Literatures GETGO Grant.

Summer Program in Kempten

Oswego offers a faculty-led summer program in Kempten.  From mid-May to mid-June, students live in apartments, study in German and/or English, and take excursions to nearby locations such as Castle Neuschwanstein, Lake Constance, Munich, and Innsbruck.

By taking at least one course in German, Oswego students are automatically eligible for a Modern Languages and Literatures GETGO Grant.

Graduate Study in Germany

Many German MA and PhD programs are taught completely in English. The DAAD maintains a searchable database of programs. Tuition for German universities is generally 100-300 Euros per semester and almost always includes a semester pass for local public transportation.  

Grants and Scholarships

GETGO Grant

The Global Experience Travel Grant from Oswego is an award specifically designed to encourage, support and promote student travel abroad to countries where languages other than English are spoken. The primary purpose of such travel abroad shall be for study or work/internships.

Margaret C. Nation Scholarship

This scholarship is for the study of French in the overseas program in Paris. Candidates for this award will be evaluated on academic achievement and must have completed one academic year prior to the year in which the award is to be made. Nomination and selection are made by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures faculty. Amount may vary from year to year.

Modern Languages and Literatures French Scholarship

This scholarship is established to help provide financial support for senior or junior level French majors who demonstrate excellence in their field. The annual award will be $1,000 for one recipient or $500 for two recipients. The student(s) are nominated by a member of the scholarship committee or faculty member based on merit and need.
