Social Media Important Guidelines

SUNY Oswego welcomes open and constructive conversation across its social media channels. We encourage engagement that is respectful, relevant and contributes to a positive community experience.

To help maintain this environment, the university may review and moderate comments on its official social media accounts. Content may be removed if it:

  • Violates applicable laws, regulations or platform terms of service
  • Includes threats, harassment or unlawful conduct
  • Discloses confidential or private information
  • Violates copyright or trademark laws
  • Is spam, duplicative or clearly unrelated to the original post
  • Promotes commercial products, services or external entities

SUNY Oswego reserves the right to remove content that does not meet these standards and to report violations when appropriate.

As a public institution, SUNY Oswego is committed to upholding free expression. Any moderation of content will be applied in a reasonable, consistent and viewpoint-neutral manner.

By engaging with SUNY Oswego’s social media channels, users acknowledge that their comments are public and may be used by the university for educational, informational or promotional purposes.

Finally, keep in mind that creating or managing official university social media accounts may involve contractual terms. Only authorized university representatives — such as a dean, vice president or the Office of Communications and Marketing — may approve such agreements. Account passwords should always be accessible to both the department head or faculty / staff representative for continuity and security.
