Social Media During a Crisis

During an emergency or crisis situation, SUNY Oswego communicates with the campus community through official channels managed by the Office of Communications and Marketing in collaboration with University Police.

These official social media accounts serve as the university’s primary sources of verified information during an incident:

Facebook: @sunyoswego
Instagram: @sunyoswego

University departments, offices, and individuals are encouraged to amplify official messages rather than creating new or conflicting updates. Sharing accurate, timely information from the university’s verified accounts helps ensure clarity, calm, and community safety.

Reporting Concerning Content

Safety is a shared responsibility. If you see something online that could threaten the safety or well-being of our community — such as posts suggesting harm to self or others, threats of violence, bullying, illegal activity, or other serious concerns — please report it immediately.

  • Supervisor
  • Office of Marketing and Communications
  • Contact University Police: 315-312-5555 (24/7)
  • In an emergency: Dial 911

Do not assume that social media threats are jokes or “anonymous.” Messages shared online can have real and serious consequences under federal, state, and campus policies. The university treats all threats as legitimate until fully investigated.

How Threats Are Handled

When a concern or threat is reported, University Police immediately assess the situation and coordinate the appropriate response.

This may include:

  • Reviewing the content to determine credibility and intent.
  • Notifying university leadership and, if necessary, SUNY System Administration.
  • Working with local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Taking protective actions such as building closures, class cancellations or shelter-in-place alerts.

Updates and verified information will always be shared through official SUNY Oswego channels and the university’s Oswego Alert system.

Remember

In a crisis, accuracy and calm communication matter most. Rely on official university accounts for updates, and help us keep our community safe by sharing verified information and reporting concerns responsibly.
