English for Academic Success and Enrollment

English for Academic Success and Enrollment (EASE) provides a direct pathway to degree study at SUNY Oswego for students who are close to meeting English language requirements.

Students with an IELTS score of 5.5 (or equivalent) can begin their university studies without delay while developing the academic English skills needed for success.

During one semester in EASE, students complete English for Academic Purposes (EAP) coursework while earning academic credit. At the end of the semester, students take an approved English proficiency test. Those who meet the required score transition directly into their degree program.

Progression Requirements

At the end of the EASE semester, students must take an approved English proficiency test and achieve the minimum score required for their intended degree program.

Progression into a degree program is not automatic and depends on meeting the required English proficiency level. Students who meet the required English proficiency level will be eligible to transition into full matriculated status in their academic program.

If the Required Score Is Not Met

Students who do not meet the required score will receive advising on next steps. Options may include:

  • Retaking the English proficiency test
  • Transfering to a full-time intensive English Language Program
  • Returning home to continue English study

What You Will Study

Students will take a full-time academic schedule of 13 or more credits designed to build the skills needed for university success. All EAP courses count toward your degree as electives and will not increase your time to graduation.

  • Composition 1: A basic writing skills course (3 credits)
  • Critical Academic English: An advanced reading, research, and critical thinking in English course (3 credits)
  • Academic Spoken English or Critical Academic Listening: Course availability depends on the semester (3 credits)
  • US Culture for International Students and/or GST 104: A one-credit course on North American culture and living in the United States (1 credit)
  • One other approved course depending on your major (3 credits)

Testing Requirements

The requirements for EASE are just below the requirements for matriculation at SUNY Oswego. Acceptance is determined upon review of test scores and eligibility. Below is a list of tests and scores accepted for this program.

  • TOEFL iBT: 56-67 (in all bands)
  • PTE: 42-49 (in all bands)

  • The university Writing Center
  • Tutoring Services
  • International student support and advising
  • Academic Advising

To Prepare for EASE

We strongly recommend students consider the Summer Intensive English Program (SIEP) before beginning EASE. SIEP provides additional speaking practice, cultural orientation, and a smoother transition to university life.
