Mission Statement

The faculty of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services, working in partnership with citizens of the world, supports and promotes extraordinary educators and learners.

Building on the wisdom of the past, the realities of the present and the promise of the future, innovative educational programs will prepare individuals who will continually strive for personal growth and become socially-conscious catalysts for change.

We will instruct, involve, challenge and care for all learners, children and adults, in the legacy of Edward Austin Sheldon.

At Oswego, you’ll experience, and learn to share with others, how authentic learning and social justice are woven into the educational experiences of students. Our conceptual framework and professional dispositions embody our faculty's values and experiences, guiding both our graduates and current learners.

Conceptual Framework & Professional Dispositions

Professional Dispositions

Professional dispositions are the habits of mind and resulting behaviors that enable educators to apply their professional knowledge and skills in alignment with the conceptual framework of the School of Education at SUNY Oswego. These dispositions encompass professional values, commitments, and ethics essential for promoting authentic learning in socially just educational environments. Candidates are expected to exhibit the potential for these dispositions upon entry into all programs. Faculty, administrators, teachers, and other school personnel support the development of candidates' understanding and practice of these dispositions from a socio-cultural perspective. The overarching goal is to prepare educators who function effectively as socially conscious catalysts for change, fostering school environments where excellence is cherished and social justice thrives.

Advocacy

Educators recognize how social structures and power dynamics can disadvantage some learners. They challenge injustice, acting with courage and patience to ensure all students can engage in authentic, high-level learning in socially just schools.

Collaboration

Educators listen, communicate, and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds to create a safe, inclusive, equitable, and shared learning environment.

Commitment to Authentic Teaching

Educators show enthusiasm, initiative, and dedication to creating a safe and inclusive environment where all students can thrive. They actively seek new ideas, diverse perspectives, and relevant knowledge to grow as socially just educators.

Critical Reflection

Educators exhibit self-awareness and critically analyze their own biases and teaching practices within a socio-cultural context. They actively seek and appropriately respond to constructive feedback from others to enhance their practice.

Integrity

Educators demonstrate honesty, fairness, and trustworthiness; adhere to professional ethics and standards of behavior; recognize and effectively challenge injustice; and act in the best interests of all students and members of the learning community.

Socially-Conscious Respect

Educators show cultural sensitivity, empathy, caring, and rapport; strive to understand others; and uphold the belief that all students can engage in authentic learning at high levels.

Socially-Conscious Responsibility

Educators hold themselves accountable for the authentic learning of all students and exhibit initiative, reliability, maturity, and sound judgment in implementing equitable best practices for all students and members of the learning community.
