Generative AI platforms continue to evolve at a rapid pace. In this session, we'll discuss recent AI developments and their implications for higher ed. Topics discussed will include: evolving features in Gemini and Google Notebook (previously called NotebookLM), recent studies of the impact of student AI use in educational settings, the expansion of free AI tool capabilities, agentic AI, new online resources for designing AI-aware assignments, browser extensions designed to answer quiz questions, the reduced likelihood of hallucinations, and the expansion of multimodal AI capabilities.

This session introduces resources and tools for finding, accessing, evaluating, and modifying free, high-quality, adaptable open education resources (OER) textbooks. We'll explore popular open textbook platforms, tools available for adapting and remixing texts, and how using AI to supplement OER materials works with Creative Commons licensing. You'll also learn about OER services offered by Penfield Library. This session is designed for AI/OER IITG grant participants but is open to any faculty or staff interested in OER textbooks.

Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly, bringing with it a dizzying mix of new terminology, capabilities, promises, and concerns. This session provides an introduction to AI, generative AI, and artificial general intelligence (AGI), including how tools such as large language models actually work and where their limitations lie. We will explore what it means to be AI literate, from understanding prompts and outputs to recognizing hallucinations, bias, and other limitations. Throughout the session, we will connect these concepts to higher education, considering how AI may influence teaching, learning, assessment, research, and the evolving role of faculty.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in higher education, faculty face ethical questions that rarely have simple answers. This session invites a thoughtful conversation about the costs, benefits, and responsibilities associated with AI use. We will examine the environmental footprint of AI, including energy and water consumption, while considering competing perspectives on whether and how these technologies belong in higher education. We will also explore academic integrity, authorship, transparency, equity, privacy, and the changing boundaries of acceptable AI assistance. Ultimately, the session asks a practical question: What might responsible and ethical AI use look like for faculty, students, and institutions?
