Kara Jones brings nearly a decade of leadership experience in economic development, innovation, entrepreneurship, and external engagement to her role as Assistant Vice President for Workforce Innovation and External Relations at SUNY Oswego. Prior to joining the University, she spent nearly 10 years at CenterState CEO, Central New York’s premier business leadership and economic development organization, where she served as Director of Programs and Engagement and Director of GENIUS NY, the world’s largest accelerator for uncrewed systems and autonomous technology. In these roles, she led initiatives supporting entrepreneurs, attracting and retaining talent, strengthening industry partnerships, and advancing the region’s innovation economy.

Kara was instrumental in the growth of the Tech Garden into INSPYRE Innovation Hub, helping expand its programming, partnerships, and reach to support entrepreneurs and businesses across a broader range of industries. As Director of GENIUS NY, she worked with founders, investors, corporate partners, government agencies, and economic development organizations to grow companies and strengthen Central New York’s position as a hub for autonomous systems and emerging technologies. Her experience also includes leading marketing and communications initiatives, developing strategic partnerships, and serving as a public information officer for Oswego County Government.

Kara holds a bachelor’s degree in public relations and marketing from SUNY Oswego and a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from Marist College. She has served as an adjunct faculty member at SUNY Oswego, teaching entrepreneurial marketing and sales, and remains actively engaged in advancing opportunities for the region’s workforce, businesses, and communities.
