Accounting, Finance and Law

At SUNY Oswego, the Department of Accounting, Finance, and Law prepares students for careers that require precision, strategy, and real-world problem solving. Our programs combine strong technical foundations with hands-on learning, giving students the skills and confidence to succeed in today’s complex business and financial environments.

Why Accounting, Finance, and Law at Oswego?

Students in this department don’t just learn theory—they apply it. Through career-focused coursework, experiential learning, and close faculty mentorship, students gain practical experience that translates directly to internships, certifications, and full-time roles after graduation.

Our programs are designed for students who want clear career pathways, strong job outcomes, and skills that employers value.

Accounting

Our Accounting undergraduate program and Accounting BS/MBA program are registered with New York State for students seeking eligibility to sit for the CPA examination. The 150-hour Accounting BS/MBA was the first combined program at a state university college to receive this registration.

Students gain a strong foundation in financial reporting, auditing, taxation, and accounting systems while developing analytical and ethical decision-making skills. Graduates are well prepared for careers in public accounting, corporate accounting, government, and nonprofit organizations.

Beyond the classroom, students can get involved in professional development opportunities and student organizations such as Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi. Students also gain hands-on experience through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and networking events like Meet the Accountants Night.

Finance

The Finance undergraduate program prepares students to understand how money moves through organizations and markets while building strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Coursework focuses on financial analysis, investments, markets, and corporate finance, giving students a practical foundation for today’s financial careers.

Graduates are prepared for roles in banking, investments, financial services, insurance, and finance departments across corporate, nonprofit, and public-sector organizations.

Outside the classroom, students can build experience and connections through opportunities such as the Investment Club, Real Estate Club, the Central New York Real Estate Conference, and hands-on competitions like the Banking Competition.
