Research

In an ongoing photographic series I frame lakes and oceans vertically according to their height above sea level. These color photographs of water, land, and sky explore the relationships of different places across distance and elevation. Large bodies of water provide orientation and grounding. They help create the identity of adjacent cities and towns, strongly informing a sense of place. But when looking out on a vast expanse of water I also feel untethered from the present as I conjure memories of other water, cities, homes, and past experience. These lakes and oceans are separated by vast distances, but similar in form and emotional impact. They simultaneously generate feelings of presence and absence. This presence and absence provides one framework for viewing these photographs.
