Well-respected for his landscapes and portraits, Schoonjans spent time in nearly every European art center during his lifetime. Additionally, he found patronage as a court painter in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Vienna and Copenhagen. The intimate, dark but comforting feel of this self-portrait may reveal a familiarity with and appreciation for the work of Rembrandt.
