Biography

Joey Sweener is a graphic designer and typographer from Rensselaer County, New York. He serves as co-president of the Oswego Design Club and is the treasurer of the Student Art Exhibition Committee. With typography as a focus, Joey's body of work aims to combine graphic, often hand-drawn, or textured imagery, with legibility and understanding. His work has awarded him the Jessie E. & Jay D. Rudolph Scholarship Award in 2018 and has participated in two shows through the Art Association of Oswego. Swiss poster design and political activism are his primary drivers in the world of graphic design; outside of the studio, you can find him with his nose stuck in a book or touring the closest art gallery.

Artist Statement

Artist Statement “PURGE the world of bourgeois sickness [...] & commercialized culture [...] promote NON ART REALITY to be grasped by all peoples, not only critics [...] and professionals.”  — George Maciunas

It shouldn’t take an economist for you to know that you’re underpaid for all the work you do at your job; neither does it take an art critic to tell you what art makes the hairs on your neck stand up and what art feels in lockstep with popular culture. I strive on every end to create work that reflects the ideas outlined by the Fluxists: artmaking as an act of transgression against the rich and powerful. My work reminds viewers that we have more in common with migrant mothers wanting a better life for their kids than we do the celebrities who profit from retweeting that migrant mother’s story. My work is not an end unto itself; it is but one small piece in the much larger puzzle of solidarity between the peoples of the world. A revolution is an act of hope. Welcome to the funeral of planet Earth; have confidence that the society founded after this one takes better care of its people (or at least gives them healthcare).

Sex Offenders at the MoMA
Silkscreen print
22x30in
2020
Part of the "Support the Arts" series, this poster depicts an airplane in a nose-dive, with the following text overlaid on the image:
"Support the arts on the LOLITA EXPRESS! Favored by Jeffrey Epstein and MoMA board members alike...you'll *kill* for these deals! Sex trafficking funded in part by the Museum of Modern Art."
(The Lolita Express was the plane sex offender Jeffrey Epstein reportedly used to traffic young girls to his private island. Two members of MoMA's board—Leon Black and Glenn Dubin—have taken money from and are directly connected to the Jeffrey Epstein estate and his trafficking activity.)
The "Support the Arts" series aims to depict the insidious ways wealth and power influences the American art world. The series also aims to show how the art world is an effective tool for powerful figures to launder their reputation through to appear more charitable, personable, or otherwise the same as you and I.

Mass Incarceration at the MoMA
Silkscreen print
22x30in
2020
Part of the "Support the Arts" series, this poster depicts grimy handcuffs, with the following text overlaid on the image:
"Support the arts with FIDELITY PENSION. The largest contribution to funding private prisons in all the art world! Brought to you by the Museum of Modern Art."
(Fidelity Pension is the MoMA's largest private fund, which owns majority stock in the private prison companies CoreCivic and GEO Group. These companies are responsible, in part, for the 667% increase in the private prisoner population since 1978.)

Tear Gas at the Whitney
Silkscreen print
22x30in.
2020
Part of the "Support the Arts" series, this poster depicts a tear-gas canister, with text written on it's front face. The text reads:
"Support the arts with MILITARY GRADE MAXIMUM CHOKE TEAR GAS. Whitney Laboratories, New York, NY 10014. Sponsored by The Whitney Museum."
There is also a black bar, resembling an embossed label, with the text "Palestinians love it! Standing Rock, too!" near the bottom of the poster.
(Former Whitney Board Director Warren B. Kanders was forced to resign in late July, 2019, following the uncovering via Hyperallergic of Kanders' ownership of weapons manufacturer Safariland. Safariland primarily produces and sells tear gas, used most notably against Standng Rock protesters, against Palestinian protesters in Gaza, and against Latinx migrants at the United States southern border by the Trump administration.)

Opioid Crisis at Freer/Sackler
Silkscreen print
22x30in.
2020
Part of the "Support the Arts" series, this poster depicts a bottle of the highly addictive and destructive drug, OxyContin, developed and distributed by Purdue Pharma of Stamford, Connecticut. The poster's text reads:
"Support the arts with highly addictive, art-funded OXYCONTIN (wealthycodone splendidae). 40mg. Distributed by Purdue Pharma L.P., Authentic Product of The Smithsonian. Infinite Deaths, Rx Only. Opioid addiction brought to you by Freer Sackler, the Smithsonian's Museums of Asian Art"
There is also a black bar, resembling an embossed label, with the text "Smithsonian Approved! 100% Effective!" near the bottom of the poster.
(The Smithsonian's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of Asian Art was named after the owner of Purdue Pharmaceutical, who contributed frequently to the Smithsonian galleries. Purdue is the developer and distributor of the highly-addictive OxyContin, and made upwards of $35 billion of profit between 2001–2017 from the opiate. After widespread and vocal protests, the Sackler name was removed from the Smithsonian's Museum of Asian Art in December 2019.)
