Artist Statement
Around is an exploration of formal elements: color, shape, line, and texture. Created at a time of confinement and social distancing, the focus of this piece on the formal feels taboo. I wanted to play with the tension between what we want and need (texture, play, pleasure) and what is prohibited (touch). Making and interacting with this work feels indulgent in a time where demonstrating restraint for public health is critical. For me, these small moments of aesthetic experience provide the balance needed to feel connected to other humans while making health and safety a priority
