While vital to the institution, attending academic meetings is something I find difficult to sit through in a focused and attentive manner. It is not lost on me how odd it is that I’ve made a career of being trapped in an environment that often makes me feel like I’ve slipped into a reality other people don’t seem to be seeing. A reality that is hidden behind a façade acting as a pretense of “normalcy” — whatever that is. To cope, I draw scenes that, while not literal representations, capture the emotional resonance of my experience using vintage Sci-Fi motifs.
It is also not lost on me that part of earning my living is trapping others in the same environment I find difficult to endure. Hopefully, they are engaged in a productive activity that gets them through the time period.
