To many viewers, this painting represents clear evidence of the “male gaze”; defined as objectifying and sexualizing women in depicting them. The subject is shown in a private moment – applying make-up with a hand-held mirror. She seems indifferent to the artist (male) and thus to subsequent viewers; contributing to the overall feeling of voyeurism.
