Student Travel

The Student ORCA supports student travel to present their work at conferences, exhibits, or performances. The purpose of this program is to support and foster graduate and undergraduate students' presentations of research, performances, artistic and other scholarly and creative activities at professional conferences and forums.

Please be advised that there is a limited amount of funds available to support student travel requests. Most applications will not receive full funding. Cost-saving procedures are encouraged such as selecting state and local conferences, applying for discount group rates at hotels nearby the conference, and driving to nearby venues instead of flying. The Student ORCA may support local and close-by regional events up to $150/presenter; regional and close-by national events up to $250/presenter; and national and international events up to $500/presenter.

These funds are only meant to support student presentations, and that you must submit a report upon your return. If your trip does not involve a presentation of your work, consider applying via EXCEL, for Feinberg funds, which do not have this limitation.

Guidelines

Graduate students enrolled in a graduate program and matriculated undergraduate students at SUNY Oswego may apply for travel support. Travel support requests should be submitted after their work has been accepted for presentation and at least two weeks prior to the event. The maximum award from any one source will be limited by the stipulations related to that funding source.

Application Criteria

Please follow the instructions below and submit all the materials requested with your application.

  • Abstract: A brief (200 words or less) abstract that reviews the purpose and importance of this project.
  • Budget: Complete a detailed budget listing items or expenses for which you are requesting funding and the cost of each.
  • Application for Funding: Students should fill in the application found online at the Student Office of Research and Creative Activities (ORCA). Students submitting group requests should submit individual requests within the 72-hour window.
  • Faculty sponsor form
  • Complete the Student Travel Application Form

Following the Event

Within ten days following the event, grant awardees must provide evidence of their experience to the ORCA office. To do so, submit the following materials:

  • Event receipts to your department for reimbursement
  • A summary of the event
  • Student Report

Submitting the Student Report is extremely important! Failure to do so will not allow other students sponsored by the same mentor to receive travel support in the future.
