Research and Academics

SUNY Oswego students and faculty are actively involved in exciting research, sharing their findings in journals, at campus QUEST symposiums, and various other forums. At Rice Creek, they can access funding, diverse project opportunities, and support for their presentations. Each semester, Rice Creek hosts over nine class sections, primarily in Biology and Zoology, providing a dynamic and enriching learning environment.

Featured Research Project: Northern Cardinal Ecology & Behavior

Biological Sciences faculty member Daniel Baldassare works with three undergraduates — Brooke Goodman, Shyla Luna and Dennis Ramos — on a variety of projects related to Northern Cardinal behavior and ecology. The project seeks to better understand why this species of songbird is so adept at surviving and thriving in urban areas, comparing findings for birds at Rice Creek Field Station (a rural, natural site) with an urban site: Barre Park in the city of Syracuse.

Student Research

SUNY Oswego students apply the skills and knowledge they have learned during class projects, independent study, or as assistants to faculty. Many research projects are field-based while some require field work and laboratory analysis.

Natural History, Collections, and Ecology

Rice Creek Field Station, situated in a diverse ecological landscape, hosts a rich variety of habitats and species. It maintains online and printed guides listing observed species from wetlands to upland forests. Biodiversity is also documented through voucher specimens in the natural history collection.

Summer Field Session

This summer, spend 2-6 weeks immersing yourself in field learning, gaining valuable hands-on experience and skills, and making progress toward your Biology or Zoology major or minor.

Bird Banding

Bird banding was an on-going event from 2007-14. Master bird bander Jim Keefer, a SUNY Oswego alumnus, volunteered to conduct this bird population ecology research and taught others about resident and migrating birds in our area. Visitors joined to observe and helped with the banding, often having hands-on experience with the birds during the process. As of Fall 2014, over 1100 birds have been banded at Rice Creek.
