Dear Members of the SUNY Oswego Community–
As we approach the final weeks of the fall semester, I want to provide an update on the important efforts underway to strengthen academic advisement across our campus. This initiative ensures that every student at SUNY Oswego will be assigned a dedicated professional advisor. This new approach to student success reflects our shared commitment to supporting every student with clarity, consistency, and meaningful guidance from their first semester through graduation.
Through collaboration among faculty, staff, and academic leaders, we developed a new advising structure that incorporates professional Academic Success Advisors into each of our colleges. These advisors will support students throughout their time at Oswego and work closely with faculty advisors and career coaches to form coordinated Academic Success and Graduation Specialist teams. Together, these teams will help students with major exploration, degree planning, experiential learning, timely graduation, access to campus resources, and preparation for life after college.
To ensure that all students receive timely and proactive support, the model, which is centrally coordinated and locally directed, includes structured advising checkpoints, expanded use of technologies like Starfish and Degree Works, and professional development opportunities for both advisors and faculty advisors. These updates will create a smoother, data-driven experience that lowers barriers for all students, promotes fair outcomes, and strengthens our commitment to student success.
Embedded advisors will begin working across our colleges in spring 2026, alongside the launch of mandatory advising checkpoints and the integration of career coaches for juniors and seniors. These initiatives will continue to be monitored and refined as we progress, ensuring the system functions effectively and adapts to the evolving needs of our students. In fall 2026, we will implement a full rollout of the new advising model.
I am grateful to all who have contributed to this important work and for your continued dedication to our students.
As we near December, I send my best wishes to our students as they prepare for finals. Your hard work inspires our entire community.
Thank you for all you do for SUNY Oswego. I hope the Thanksgiving holiday brings you rest, connection, and gratitude.
Remain well,
Peter O. Nwosu
