Undergraduate Applicants

Degree-seeking undergraduate students are the majority of the international population at SUNY Oswego. This page provides information on admissions requirements, annual expenses, scholarship information, and the application process.

Admission Requirements

In order to be eligible for admission to SUNY Oswego, international applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Possess the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma
  2. Demonstrate a minimum grade point average (GPA) equivalent to 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale
  3. Submit English proficiency scores as indicated below. Additional scores may be considered on a case-by-case basis; please view the English Proficiency Requirements for a complete list of English proficiency scores that are currently accepted for admission to the university.
    • TOEFL iBT minimum score of 71
    • IELTS minimum score of 6.0
    • Cambridge English Scale minimum score of C1
  4. Enroll in our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program, if applicable. If your English proficiency results do not meet our minimum requirements or you do not feel confident in your English abilities prior to attending SUNY Oswego, you have the option to enroll in the EAP program online, through our partner, Oxford International Digital Institute. If the additional components of your application are acceptable, you can be conditionally admitted to SUNY Oswego by showing proof of enrollment in this program. In order to be fully admitted to SUNY Oswego you must successfully complete the EAP program and meet our minimum requirements.

Required Documents

The following documents are required as part of your application for admittance to SUNY Oswego:

  • Official transcripts from all previously-attended institutions at the high school and university level, if applicable
  • Proof of English proficiency as outlined above
  • Other materials, such as a Gap and College after High School Statement, may also be required on a case-by-case basis

Students who score below the required levels and need additional English preparation prior to admission can enroll in SUNY Oswego's Intensive English Program, which is offered year-round.

Native English Speakers

Native English speakers are not required to demonstrate proof of English language proficiency provided they meet the following criteria:

  • Citizen of Australia, The Bahamas, Canada, Guam, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, Sierra Leone or the United Kingdom; and
  • Indicate on their application they are a native English speaker; and
  • Instructed entirely in English, at least at the secondary (high school) level.

Standardized Exams (SAT or ACT)

International applicants are not required to provide SAT/ACT scores in order to be considered for admission to SUNY Oswego.

Cost of Attendance

Review the 2024-2025 cost of attendance. Admitted students, refer to your letter of acceptance for a more detailed estimate of your tuition and fees, including any scholarships you received. This is the minimum amount that you will need to show proof of in your financial documentation.

Scholarships

All international students applying to SUNY Oswego are eligible to be considered for generous scholarships and awards at the time of application. No separate scholarship application is required.

Application Deadline

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Please submit your application as soon as possible for priority consideration. Applicants are encouraged to submit all documents by May 15 for the Fall (August) semester, or November 15 for the Spring (January) semester.

To apply for admission to SUNY Oswego, you can choose to submit the SUNY Application or Common Application. Both applications require a non-refundable $50 fee, as well as a teacher/counselor evaluation. 

If you choose the SUNY Application, you are also required to complete and submit a SUNY Supplemental Application
