Christine Mosich, Oswego's STEM and Healthcare Career Coach, introduces the 8 Career Readiness Competencies identified by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) that every employer is looking for in new hires across all industries and all types of positions. In this interactive workshop you will identify what opportunities you’ve had to develop these skills and show you how to analyze job descriptions to distinguish what the top qualifications are for each position you may be interested in. You’ll end this session with a clear picture on how you can strengthen your application materials and how to answer interview questions addressing the top skills employers are seeking.

Christine Mosich, SUNY Oswego's STEM and Healthcare Career Coach, will help you learn how to conduct a skills gap analysis using one of our occupation information databases so you can best identify what skills you need to be a competitive candidate. Explore additional skills or experiences you may still need and various methods for how you can develop these qualifications for future applications.

“My Identity and My Career” IG Live

Check out the "My Identity & My Career" interview with Sandra Michaca ‘13 and Jayvana Perez ‘22. They discuss how career development and personal identity intersect and impact one another. Sandra Michaca earned a BA in Public Justice and Spanish from SUNY Oswego and was involved with the Asian Student Association, Alpha Sigma Chi, Student Association, Black Law Student Association, Caribbean Student Association, Latino Student Union and ALANA. Sandra's parents immigrated from Mexico in 1990, and she is the first in her family to go to college and get a doctorate degree. Sandra currently works at The Lopez Law Firm as an immigration attorney.

Weekly Checklist

Work at your own pace to complete these tasks:

  1. Watch/listen to an informational interview about discovering your career path with Edwin Gonzalez '12, moderated by Todd Cole '21.
  2. Reflect on Monday’s panel and identify at least 2 things you learned from our alumni in hiring roles 

  3. Create a list of experiences you’ve had and connect each of these to one of the 8 Career Readiness Competencies (May use screenshot of completed chart used during Tuesday’s session) 

  4. Make a list of the top 3 to 5 themed qualifications you identified in the job description or the graduate/professional schools’ program description (May use screenshot of completed chart used during Wednesday’s session) 

  5. Compare your skills and experiences chart to the themed qualifications list and identify any skills you still need to be a competitive candidate 

  6. Create an account with any of the tools discussed Thursday to assist you in closing the skill gap you identified (Ex. Parker Dewey, LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, edX, etc.)

  7. Further educate yourselves on knowledge, skills and abilities needed with occupations of choice using O*NET
  8. Update any or all application materials to reflect skills employers are looking for with occupations of interest  

  9. Practice answering behavioral style interview questions based on the themed skills you identified in Tuesday’s session

  10. Reflect on Tuesday’s panel and identify at least 2 things you learned from our Graduate Studies team about graduate school
