In Memoriam

Dr. Gary Klatsky (1949 - 2009)

The college community is deeply saddened by the death of Gary Klatsky, 59, associate professor of psychology. He died April 3, 2009, at his home in Liverpool. He had been on medical leave this semester.

Dr. Klatsky arrived in Central New York in 1982 to work in the radar division of General Electric after completing his doctoral work in cognitive psychology at SUNY Buffalo.

He came to SUNY Oswego in 1995 and was founding director of Oswego's master's program in human-computer interaction, the first such program in New York state. He taught courses in cognition, cognitive neuroscience and human factors. He received the campus President's Award for Excellence in Academic Advisement in 1999. He was a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and was sought out for his expertise in these areas by national media.

Dr. Klatsky received his bachelor's degree in psychology from C. W. Post College in 1975 and his master's in experimental psychology from San Francisco State University in 1979 before enrolling in Buffalo's doctoral program.

He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Mandel, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; a daughter, Danielle; a son, Alex; and three sisters, Susan, Myra and Bonnie, among other relatives.

A scholarship fund has been created in his honor. Donations can be sent to:
