Center for Urban Schools

The SUNY Oswego Center for Urban Schools has operated since 2000 and has served as a foundation for dialog, programming, scholarship, and grant writing related to teacher preparation for urban schools.

We have supported faculty and staff to secure more than $6.3 million in federal and state funding for urban teacher recruitment, preparation, and professional development.

Faculty and staff have developed several courses so that students can study about and learn in urban schools. We have also spearheaded a move to a clinically rich urban student teacher residency program (2012–2017).

About Us

The Center for Urban Schools works to help the College of Education, Health, and Human Services meet its commitment to teaching for social justice. We also support their efforts to establish a presence in schools where:

  • Student poverty rates are the highest
  • Student diversity is the norm
  • Educational resources are extremely scarce
  • Student achievement and teacher availability are the lowest

Namely, New York State urban schools.

Our goals align with others on campus such as the College of Education, Health, and Human Services Diversity Committee, Project SMART Professional Development efforts, and the campus Admissions offices.

To reach these goals, the Center for Urban Schools serves as a resource center for communication between prospective undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and representatives from agencies interested in or engaged in urban education activities.

Goals

  • Increasing the number of education graduates who take positions in urban schools.
  • Increasing the number and quality of urban placements for pre-teachers.
  • Supporting urban teachers via partnership arrangements.
  • Maintaining partnerships with other urban educators (schools, universities, and agencies).
  • Supporting faculty, pre-teachers, and graduate students in their study and/or urban education partnership work.
  • Increasing the number of urban students in the education programs.
  • Seeking funds to support a variety of urban education initiatives.

At the Center for Urban Schools we are interested in hiring work-study students who have a background or an interest in urban education.
