Cindy Sprague Undergraduate Scholars Grant Program
The Department of Psychological Sciences established the Undergraduate Scholars Grant Program in 1989 as a means for support of quality, student-initiated scholarly activity in psychology. The Department of Psychological Sciences administers the program, which is supported and endowed through The Oswego College Foundation account started by Roger and Margaret Sprague of Mexico, NY. The grant is named in honor of their daughter, Cindy Sprague, who died the summer before she would have attended SUNY Oswego. Grants may be used for research-related costs (equipment, participant payment), page costs for publication, and/or travel funding to present research at a regional or national conference. Individual grants of up to $400 are awarded on a rolling basis, and are reviewed and approved by the Department of Psychological Sciences. Professor Herbert Van Shaack Endowed Scholarship
This award recognizes an outstanding student majoring in Psychology at SUNY Oswego. The scholarship was established in recognition of Dr. Van Schaack’s accomplishments and contributions during his 39 years at SUNY Oswego. A 1951 graduate of SUNY Oswego, Dr. VanSchaack obtained the rank of Distinguished Service Professor and was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in teaching. Dr. Van Schaack also served as Chairman of the Faculty Assembly for 10 years. To qualify for this award a student must: (a) be a matriculated major in their junior year in Psychology, entering their senior year, (b) have a minimum 3.50 GPA in Psychology, (c) have a minimum 3.30 overall GPA, and (d) demonstrate promise and commitment to pursue an advanced degree in Psychology. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated leadership qualities and has participated in service in the community. Preference may also be given to students who have been a teaching assistant in the Department of Psychological Sciences. This scholarship comes with a $1,316 award to be applied to the student's tuition in their senior year. Additionally, if the student attends graduate school then this award is renewable for another $1,316 to be applied to their first year of graduate school tuition. Helen B. Daly Award for Excellence in Psychological Research
This award is dedicated to Dr. Helen B. Daly in recognition of her contributions during 27 years at Oswego. During this time Dr. Daly obtained the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor and was awarded both the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Oswego Gold Medal for Excellence in Research and Sponsored Programs. In order to continue her dedication to the development of outstanding student researchers, this award is presented to a student or students who have demonstrated outstanding skills and accomplishments in psychology research. To qualify for this award a student must: (a) be a matriculated major in their junior or senior year in Psychology, (b) have a minimum 3.50 GPA in Psychology, (c) have a minimum 3.30 overall GPA, (d) demonstrate promise and commitment to pursue a graduate degree, and (e) demonstrate long-term contribution to research that resulted in a scientific conference presentation, and has the potential to result in a peer-reviewed publication. Preference will be given to students engaged in research using experimental designs. This award is recognized at the SUNY Oswego Honors Convocation and comes with a $150 monetary gift. The Department of Psychological Sciences selects students to receive this award.
David J. King Outstanding Senior in Psychology Award
This award was established in 1989 by Dr. Paul Wilbur, Professor Emeritus of psychology, in memory of Dr. David J. King who was chair of the Department of Psychology from 1968 to 1976. To qualify for this award a student must: (a) be a matriculated major in their senior year in Psychology, (b) have a minimum 3.50 GPA in Psychology, (c) have a minimum 3.30 overall GPA, (d) demonstrate an involvement in a variety of clubs and organizations, and (e) demonstrate significant contribution to psychology in at least one of the following areas: research, teaching, service, or leadership. This award is recognized at the SUNY Oswego Honors Convocation and comes with a $150 monetary gift. The Department of Psychological Sciences selects students to receive this award.
Dean's Writing Award in Psychology
This award is given to one Psychology student each year who has demonstrated exemplary performance in their written coursework. To qualify for this award a student must have a course paper that: (a) received a high grade, (b) reflects depth and clarity of thought and scientific writing, and (c) is an excellent example of student achievement. This award is recognized at QUEST and comes with a $100 monetary gift. The Department of Psychological Sciences selects students to receive this award.
