SUNY Oswego’s University Police recently received accreditation from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, reflecting the department meeting and continuing to uphold professional standards across its administration, training and operations.

“Achieving this initial accreditation represents a monumental milestone for the SUNY Oswego University Police Department, reinforcing our deep commitment to professionalism, preparedness and public safety,” University Police Chief Scott Swayze said. “For our campus community of students, faculty, staff and visitors, this recognition provides absolute assurance that their safety is managed by a team operating under the highest validated standards in law enforcement.”

Earning the accreditation was a rigorous and comprehensive process encompassing several years of hard work from all University Police Department members, Swayze said.

“The thorough review included an extensive audit of departmental files, over 70 field observations and 161 interviews to verify compliance across 112 strict operational standards, resulting in a unanimous recommendation for our accreditation,” he noted.

“This historic success was driven by the meticulous coordination of our Accreditation Program Manager, Officer Ryan McIntyre,” Swayze added. “Tremendous credit also belongs to SUNY Oswego President Dr. Peter O. Nwosu and Vice President Victoria L. Furlong for their unwavering institutional backing, as well as NYSUP Commissioner Mary Ritayik, Deputy Commissioner Richard Bialkowski and our dedicated pre-evaluators and formal evaluators for their vital support throughout this two-year journey.”
