SUNY Oswego launches cannabis studies microcredential to meet emerging industry needs
SUNY Oswego's Division of Extended Learning recently announced the launch of a new microcredential in cannabis studies, designed to prepare students for evolving careers in the cannabis industry and related fields.
Developed under the leadership of Marthinus (Martin) Koen, associate professor of criminal justice and cannabis studies program chair, the program is tailored for students seeking to work in the cannabis sector as well as professionals in fields where cannabis plays an increasing role.
“This is also good for anyone who wants to stack the microcredential on their existing degrees,” Koen said. “You can imagine that people across myriad industries could in some way encounter cannabis in their professional lives. Think about cops, nurses, business owners.”
Koen added that the microcredential can open doors to roles such as working in dispensaries, cannabis farms or other cannabis-related businesses. “For those students who wish to stack the microcredential to their existing degree, it can help provide background knowledge to help them in their daily work,” he noted.
Hands-on learning and expert engagement are an important part of the curriculum. Guest speaker Joe Mello, author of "Pot for Profit," has already addressed classes and more guest opportunities are in the pipeline, according to Koen.
“The chance to do something special here and distinguish ourselves from other SUNY schools is what excites me most,” Koen said. “This is a new industry that is here to stay. We need to study it and prepare students to be part of it.”
Jill Pippin, dean of extended learning, said the microcredential underscores SUNY Oswego’s commitment to meeting emerging workforce demands and expanding flexible educational pathways. “We’re proud to offer a program that aligns with industry shifts and gives students and working professionals real options to adapt, grow and succeed,” Pippin said.
The cannabis studies microcredential is now available for enrollment and will provide a flexible option for students to add credentials to existing degrees or pursue a targeted credential in this evolving field.
