SUNY Oswego's SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management) student chapter recently received a national Superior Merit Award to the for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.

SHRM, considered the trusted authority on all things work, workers and the workplace, hosts the SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award program to encourage the development of more effective student chapters and distinguish outstanding activities and projects. Chapters are recognized based on operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession and SHRM engagement.

“The members of our SHRM student chapters represent the next generation of HR leaders, and their passion, talent, and commitment are vital to the future of our profession,” said Johnny C. Taylor Jr., president and chief executive officer of SHRM. “The accomplishments of SUNY Oswego reflect the innovation, leadership, and dedication that will shape tomorrow’s workplaces. I applaud their success and ability to drive innovative programming, professional development, and a deeper interest in HR.”

“I am pleased that our chapter is recognized for outstanding achievements, commitment to providing meaningful program, and continued growth opportunities for our members,” said Josh Poorman, SHRM student chapter president.

“I am incredibly proud of our SHRM student officers and members,” said SHRM faculty advisor Barry A. Friedman of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. “Their vision and drive earned this prestigious recognition. Special kudos to Kaedyn McClain and Josh Poorman for their exceptional leadership. This group showcases the power of creative, motivated students engaging in hands-on learning — from studying strategic HRM at Wegmans Food Market headquarters to analyzing its real-world implementation at their flagship store.”

"It is an honor for me as a faculty member to be associated with such a wonderful organization and its student leaders," added faculty co-advisor Steven E. Abraham.

“This recognition reflects the excellence and professionalism our students bring to every endeavor,” said Kristen Eichhorn, interim dean of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. “The SHRM student chapter exemplifies how experiential learning and leadership development prepare our graduates to make an immediate impact in the workplace."

The organization's success reflects how the Laker network — including students, faculty, staff and alumni — creates career-ready and in-demand graduates through meaningful activities inside and outside the classroom, officials noted.

"Their success underscores SUNY Oswego’s commitment to cultivating business leaders who combine knowledge, integrity and innovation to shape the future of work," Eichhorn said. "I’ve had the privilege of seeing students like Josh and Kaedyn represent SUNY Oswego at recruitment events, alumni showcases and in leadership roles across campus, further demonstrating their dedication to the long‑term success of this organization. We are fortunate to have such passionate students who hold this chapter, and its mission, in the highest regard.”
