With the Graduate Admissions Virtual Open House taking place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, recent master's graduate Kenny Girard is among those who can point to an advanced Oswego degree as beneficial to career preparation.

"After graduating with my bachelor's degree, I felt the desire to continue to improve upon my leadership and communication skills to further my career," said Girard. "My path to the strategic communication master's program began with my undergraduate experience at SUNY Oswego."

Girard came to Oswego in fall 2022 to major in broadcasting and mass communications with a minor in sports studies. He quickly discovered the many campus opportunities and served in many leadership roles on campus. These included serving as general manager of student-run television station WTOP-10; executive producer of TEDxSUNY Oswego for its first two years as an organization; and co-founder, vice president and head coach of Oswego's flag football team for its first three years as an organization.

"During these experiences, I found that I enjoyed leadership roles and helping others, and I became an effective communicator," Girard said. "Following the completion of my master's degree, I plan on taking a role in human resources, so I can continue to be a helping hand to others, keep being a leader and continue to become a more effective communicator. This program has given me what it has promised; it has opened doors to new experiences, challenged my abilities as a writer, refined my skills as a communicator and helped me jumpstart my future."

About the open house

At the Nov. 10 interactive virtual open house, attendees can meet Oswego's Graduate Studies team and learn about the admissions process, key application tips and an overview of the graduate student experience. They also can connect directly with program coordinators in a group breakout session.

Attendees are invited to ask questions, and dive into program specifics, curriculum details and career pathways. They can wrap up with essential insights and resources from the Office of Financial Aid to help plan for this future investment.

Whether you are ready to submit your application or just starting to explore your options, this one-hour session is the perfect place to get your questions answered, organizers said.
